Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science (IMCS), founded in 1959, is the leading Latvian research institute in computer science and is involved in basic research as well as in development of commercial software for information systems, telecommunications, Internet tools, etc. The main research directions are system modelling and design, model transformations, telecommunications software, data networking, natural language processing and computational learning theory.

In the field of system modelling and design, an advanced system modelling tool, GRADE, has been developed. GRADE is used by companies throughout the world, including, for example, Siemens Nixdorf, Boeing, and EDS. The next stage in the area of modelling tools has been the development of a generic meta-model-based graphical modelling environment (together with Exigen Latvia).

Working together with other European partners, IMCS successfully concluded the EU ESPRIT project
ADDE (Application Development for the Distributed Enterprise) in January 1999. The current research in system design area is focused on model transformations – the design of model transformation languages, their implementation and application to various domains. The main result is the model transformation language MOLA and its implementation. The graduate program in Computer Science of the University of Latvia is located at IMCS and enabled by its staff.
