HITeC is the technology transfer institution of the Department of Informatics at Hamburg University. It is a legally independent unit providing several kinds of services to the department and the public, in particular presentation and dissemination of R&D results of university researchers and R&D cooperation with companies. The Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence (LKI) is the part of HITeC, processing projects in the area of intelligent systems. The LKI is dedicated to application-oriented research in Artificial Intelligence. Cooperative projects are carried out between AI researchers of the university and industry. The guiding theme of the LKI is "computer models of technical systems". By modelling technical systems and investigating reasoning processes related to technical systems, the LKI develops the foundations and tools for a broad class of applications. The LKI has participated in several joint projects together with industrial and academic partners. Among others, LKI was partner in two BMBF-funded joint projects on configuration. In the project TEX-K (1985 - 1989), the LKI developed PLAKON as a first prototype for a model-based configuration tool. This work was extended in the joint project PROKON (1991 - 1995) to support specific application-specific requirements. In the EU-Project “Configuration in Industrial Product Families” (ConIPF) (2002-2005) the results of previous research work about knowledge-based configuration could be used for configuring products of product families in software-intensive systems. The result of this project is a methodology for product derivation in this area using knowledge-based configuration techniques. Furthermore the LKI processed several bilateral projects covering aspects like software engineering and software ergonomy.
